Do you worry that your child is a little too shy? Social anxiety in young adults is real. The shyness that you suspect could in fact be a true situational fear. Hypnotherapy is a great way to encourage outgoing behavior in people of all ages- without the involvement of addictive medications.
Identifying Social Anxiety
How do you know whether your child is shy or experiencing social anxiety? While children often try to mask social anxiety, there are a few signs to look for. Signs include avoiding group play, refusing to speak in groups, repeatedly asking anxious questions, and getting upset when thinking about hypothetical situations where they would need to have attention drawn to them. These signs can also be coupled with symptoms like sweating, brain fog, and rapid heart rate. The symptoms may include excessively fearing situations where they may be judged, feeling worried about humiliation, or feeling concerned about offending someone. Consult your pediatrician if you think your child is experiencing social anxiety.
Hypnotherapy for Self Esteem
The root cause of social phobia is unknown. However, current research supports the idea that it is caused by a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Negative experiences (ie bullying) can also contribute to this disorder. While some shy people can connect their social anxiety to having been triggered by previous traumatic experiences, there are other factors involved in shyness. Self-esteem can influence a person’s willingness and ability to connect with others. For children and young adults, riveting emotions caused by puberty can cause detrimental thinking due to the natural compulsion to compare themselves to others. Social comparison bias is a natural response to seeing someone who is seemingly better than ourselves. Learning how to control imposter syndrome and increase our self-love is key to being willing to connect with others. Comparison is a thief of joy.
Hypnotherapy is a great way to demolish dangerous old mindsets and rebuild pathways to being more outgoing. For hypnotherapy to work long-term, life changes need to be made. As the parent of a young adult with social anxiety, it is important to be an advocate for their mental health. Regularly encourage your loved ones to practice self-compassion exercises and actively work towards being whole-heartedly present during their clinical hypnotherapy sessions. Being an understanding parent is extremely important. Shy kids are also more likely to become socially anxious adults. The same can be said for children with overbearing or controlling parents.
