Why is it that children's minds are like a sponges?
Hypnosis is a state of mind that allows us to slow down our brain waves. A child's brain waves are slower by nature. Children are in a constant state of hypnosis. This makes them highly suggestible. This is because they have not learned how to analyze yet, or they have not developed, what we call, a critical factor. Everything you tell a child goes right to their subconscious. The subconscious is our emotions, our imaginations, and our memories. The subconscious takes over the things that become automatic. So, if we have a lot of negative things thrown at us when we are young, then those ideas become an automatic way of responding that can take over our lives. A child's brain waves begin to speed up at the age of eight and develop to adult speeds by the age of eleven.
In hypnosis we are placing our minds into a childlike state. In this way, we can become as little children, as we allow ourselves to go into a state of hypnosis, meditation, or pondering. Our minds slow down, and we are once again like that little child - ready to learn and grow. Matthew, in the bible, states, "Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew, 18:3). Convert, according to the oxford dictionary, means "having been adapted to be suitable for a new purpose." In a state of hypnosis we can adapt ourselves to new purposes. We can rewrite the negative programing we have been living with since childhood.
I'm also reminded of the scripture, "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." (Matthew, 18:6).
Meditating, pondering, or going into a state of hypnosis allows us to discover those memories, to better understand those misperceptions of our child selves. We can begin to reprogram ourselves at the subconscious level, so that our actions may become positive, automatically.
When speaking to a child, watch what you say, and how you say it. They are absorbing everything.
